Melbourne freight company charged over fatal unloading incident

A Melbourne freight company has been charged after a worker died while unloading sections of steel light poles from a truck at Altona North in June 2020.

The man died after two of the sections became unstable and fell on him.

The company faces two charges under the Victorian OHS Act for failing to provide and maintain a safe working environment.

WorkSafe alleges the company breached a section of the Victorian OHS Act by failing to provide or maintain a safe system of work that would eliminate or reduce the risk of loads becoming unstable and falling from a truck.

The safety watchdog further alleges the company failed to provide training to enable workers to safely unload trucks

The matter due to be heard at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 15 March 2022.
