Investigations launched after fire at Broken Hill underground mine

An investigation into the causes of an underground mine fire at Broken Hill has been launched by the NSW Resources Regulator. This incident took place on 12 January 2025.

The Regulator has stated that the investigation will examine whether a polyurethane ground stabiliser experienced self-heating after its application by workers engaged in ground support and remedial activities in a remote underground location.

According to the Regulator, workers operating underground detected the presence of fumes and vapors during the application of the product.

“The workers successfully retreated to fresh air where they remained until it was assessed as safe to leave the mine,” the regulator said.

“All workers were safely removed from the mine and there were no injuries reported by the mine operator regarding this incident.”
