Heavy vehicle regulator launches nationwide initiative to address fatigue among truckies

The national heavy vehicle regulator (NHVR) is commencing a nationwide campaign to combat fatigue, after almost 5,000 fatigue-related violations were recorded in the last year.

The initiative titled 'Operation Ambit' is set to be implemented nationwide over the next few weeks, focusing on heavy vehicle drivers who engage in risky behavior regarding their work and rest obligations.

“Fatigue is one of the biggest risks for heavy vehicle crashes across Australia,” NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati said.

 “Australia’s heavy vehicle industry is vital to our nation, but it is also demanding, high-stakes work which requires skill, focus and resilience every day.”

Mr. Salvati indicated that a similar initiative executed by the NHVR in the previous year exposed troubling rates of non-compliance among truckies.
