Firefighter killed while combating fire in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula

An experienced firefighter has perished in the fight against a blaze in South Australia's Eyre Peninsula.

The 65-year-old man was located by his team at the Pinkawillinie Conservation Park on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately, he could not be rescued.

The Wirrabarra firefighter, along with 12 colleagues, had been engaged in efforts to put out a scrub fire in the conservation park, which is thought to have been ignited by a lightning strike on Saturday.

SA Country Fire Service Chief Executive Brett Loughlin remarked that while firefighting may pose significant risks, the loss of any firefighter resonates deeply across the country, and the incident is under investigation.

“We are a close-knit community and indeed we are a family,” he said.
