Darwin construction company facing industrial manslaughter charge over workplace death

NT WorkSafe has charged a Darwin construction company with industrial manslaughter following the death of a worker at Maningrida two years ago.

The company faces a maximum penalty of $10,355,000 if found guilty.

NT WorkSafe said the company also faces two alternative charges over the March 2020 incident.

The safety regulator has also charged the company’s sole director over the death.

The director faces a charge of reckless conduct with a maximum penalty of $600,000 or five years in prison or both; and an alternative charge of failing to comply with a health and safety duty, with a maximum penalty of $300,000.

This is the first prosecution for industrial manslaughter since the introduction of the offence in the Northern Territory, NT WorkSafe said on Monday.
