Canterbury farm fined for fatal workplace incident
WorkSafe is urging farmers to evaluate the movement of vehicles within their barns and sheds, in light of a recent sentencing related to a tragic fatality at one of South Canterbury's largest agribusinesses.
In March 2022, a 45-year-old man was killed after being crushed by a hydraulic tailgate on a trailer at a farm near Temuka.
According to WorkSafe, the man was located at the back of a dimly lit, confined shed, acting as a spotter while grass seed was being discharged from the trailer.
The investigation conducted by WorkSafe revealed the farm did not have an established plan for controlling indoor traffic. Additionally, it was not permissible for workers to enter such a confined space.
The farm has recently been penalised by the Timaru District Court for its shortcomings in health and safety compliance.
