Fatal steel beam crush leads to $525,000 fine for Sydney company
A company has been fined $525,000 after a worker was fatally crushed by a steel beam at a Sydney worksite three years ago.
The worker died after a 9000kg steel beam fell on him in July 2020. Workers were using a mobile crane to move the steel beam when the incident occurred.
The company was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to workplace health and safety charges at the District Court.
Judge Scotting said the company knew the steel beams posed serious risks to workers.
“The likelihood of the risk coming home was moderate. The steps taken prior to the incident were not sufficient to prevent it,” he said.
