What is a SWMS?

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a document that outlines how to carry out high-risk construction work safely. It helps businesses:

  • Identify hazards
  • Outline control measures
  • Specify personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Assign responsibilities
  • Prepare for emergencies
  • Maintain compliance with WHS legislation

A completed SWMS helps reduce incidents, manage onsite health, and provide clear guidance to workers and supervisors. It’s a legal requirement for many high-risk tasks under WHS laws and an essential part of every risk assessment process.

How to Use This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) Template

1

Describe the Work

Start with a clear outline of the task. Include site-specific details, equipment involved, and environmental factors that may affect the work.

2

Break the Task into Steps

Document each part of the task sequentially. This makes it easier to identify where hazards exist and apply the correct control measures.

3

Identify Hazards and Risks

For each step, consider what could go wrong. Think about tools, plant, environmental conditions, manual handling, or worker behaviour.

4

Outline Control Measures

Use the hierarchy of control to define how risks will be managed - engineering controls, admin controls, PPE, or elimination/substitution.

5

List PPE Requirements

Be specific: gloves, goggles, respirators, steel-capped boots - whatever applies to the task. Ensure workers know how to wear and maintain PPE correctly.

6

Assign Responsibilities

Include the names or roles of supervisors, safety officers, and workers responsible for safety tasks and approvals.

7

Document Emergency Procedures

Identify muster points, fire equipment, first aid responders, and contact numbers. Workers should know what to do and who to call.

8

Complete and Review the SWMS

Ensure workers review the SWMS before work begins and sign off to confirm they understand and agree to follow it. Review the SWMS regularly and update it as needed, especially when site conditions change.
