Research shows older farmers face high risk of fatal workplace injuries

A new study has found that farmers aged 55 years and over are more likely to suffer fatal workplace injuries compared to their younger counterparts.

According to researchers, farm vehicles, including quad bikes, tractors and utes, are the leading cause of deaths and injuries on Australian farms.

The findings of the study, published in the Australian Journal of Rural Health, were presented at a conference in Brisbane last week.

"You may see bumper stickers that state 'no farms, no food' but think about 'no farmer, no farm," researcher Kerri-Lynn Peachey said while presenting the findings.

She said we should ensure farmers get home safely.
