Drilling company fined for tragic workplace death

Drilling company fined for tragic workplace death.

A drilling company has been fined $375,000 for an incident in October 2017, where a worker was fatally crushed by a truck.

The young man had only been on the job for three weeks and was unsupervised working underneath a truck that was on sloping ground and not adequately stabilised when the incident occurred.

Investigations by SafeWork NSW found that the company didn't have a safe system of work in place for the servicing of its heavy vehicles at its premises.

The company pleaded guilty to a breach of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 in the District Court of NSW.

Safework NSW's Executive Director, Investigations & Enforcement, Valerie Griswold, said, 'We will continue to take strong enforcement action against businesses that do not uphold proper workplace safety standards because, as we have seen here, innocent people can lose their lives.'
