Locomotive driver injured during sugar cane harvest

Locomotive driver injured during sugar cane harvest.

An employee has been injured in a shunting incident. The accident happened on Saturday afternoon near Camila in Queensland.

It is believed the locomotive driver was trapped between the locomotive and a sugar cane bin while collecting a full rake of cane bins. It has been confirmed that he was not participating in a training activity at the time of the accident. The company is working with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to investigate the incident.

The Plane Creek driver was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment following the accident and is currently in a stable condition.

Workplace health and safety education grants a boost.

WorkSafe Victoria is funding a new grants program to initiate improved safety in the workplace.

The aim of the WorkSafe grants program is to deliver outstanding workplace safety and education projects in Victoria, with fresh ideas on how to reduce workplace harm and improve outcomes for injured workers.

The first round of applications for grants valued at $2 million opened yesterday. To be eligible, you must be a community group or local organisation, employer, or representative employee group and have an ABN. There will be three tiers of funding grants awarded - up to $50,000, $50,000-$500,000 and more than $500,000.

Sam Jenkin, Executive Director of External Affairs at WorkSafe, said the focus was on nurturing safety and recovery support innovation in the workplace.

'Innovative programs can make a lasting difference to the lives of many Victorian workers and their families and play a lead role in improving safety in many workplaces,' Mr Jenkin said.

Grant applications can be submitted online until Wednesday, 18 August, and further information on how to apply for a grant can be found at www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/worksafe-grants-program.
